ABIDJAN – 01 October, 2019 – Adiel Akplogan yesterday joined the ranks of notable individuals who have been inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame for their significant contributions to the advancement of the global Internet. Adiel Akplogan received that distinction for his contributions to the expansion and governance of the Internet in Africa, particularly as founding CEO of the Regional Internet Registry for Africa. The induction ceremony took place in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Akplogan is a national of Togo and has more than 25 years of top, diversified experience in digitalisation, Internet technology (IT) and governance across Africa and beyond. He is currently Vice President for Global Technical Engagement at the Los Angeles-based Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
Passionate about internet technology and its impact on human development, Akplogan is one of the most prominent internet development pioneers in West Africa. He established and helped launch several private Internet service providers in the region in the 1990s. He also led the setup, operations, and development of the African Internet Number Registry – AFRINIC (www.afrinic.net) from 2003 to 2015. He has actively contributed to the establishment of several technical coordination bodies in Africa. They include the African Network Operators Group (AfNOG), the African ccTLD Managers Association, the Africa Top Level Domains Organisation (AfTLD), AfricaCERT, and the Africa Internet Summit. Akplogan is Vice President for Technical Engagement at ICANN. Adiel has more than 25 years’ experience in the information and communications technology (ICT) industry. Of this, 20 years have been spent specifically in the Internet Technology Industry. He was previously CEO of the African Network Information Centre (AFRINIC) from 2004 to 2015); IT Director for Symbol Technology in France from 2001 to2003; and Director of New Technology at CAFÉ Informatique in Togo from 1994 to 2000.
Akplogan has also served in a volunteer capacity onboards or advisory committees of many international organisations. This includes the UN Internet Governance Forum Multi-stakeholder Advisory Group from 2006 to 2009; the Technical Advisory Committee of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa from 2005 to 2006; the Executive Council of the Number Resource Organization as Chair, Secretary and Treasurer between 2005 and 2015; and ICANN’s Strategic Panel on its role in the Internet Governance ecosystem; the Africa Union’s AXIS program Steering Committee from 2012 to 2015); the Africa Network Operators Group; the Africa Internet Summit’s Administration and Programme committee from 2000 to 2015; and the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie’s Expert Group on Internet Governance since 1999.
