Atlanta, GA – Fisum Tsegaye, better known as FisumT, is an Ethiopian singer, songwriter, and actor. FisumT was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he grew up until his mid-teens, before moving to the United States, in 2003. At a young age, FisumT showed a deep passion for performing arts. Throughout the years, he has successfully expanded his artistic growth primarily in singing and acting.
The main trait to know about FisumT is that beyond all he identifies as an avid Ethiopian, who is very proud of his heritage. Ethiopia is a diverse mix of rich cultures and traditions in which music plays a great role. FisumT embraces the colorful fabric of his background and is devoted to carry the torch through his music and beyond.
Three main characteristics define FisumT. The number one virtue is undoubtedly patience; a direct correlation with time. Over the years, he invested ample time to the evolution of his music. Whether it was spending time writing lyrics or practicing vocals, the time devoted to the various exercises was never scarce. Not surprisingly, none of the above would have been remotely possible without passion for the music itself. The very art of expressing oneself through a flow of melodies is a gift of God that springs from the very bottom of FisumT’ s soul. The third ingredient is no other than tenacity. The determination to continuously evolve and better himself in what he does. His curious mind permits him to attain unreached territories and present a new version of himself. Over the past years, FisumT has delighted his fans by releasing numerous singles with unconventional beats representing a fusion of various genres in one. He has also assumed various acting roles on-stage performances, as well as television series.
Notable Singles Released
The release of Addis Ababa – in 2013 is considered the official debut of FisumT in the music scene. The single quickly become very popular in Ethiopia, as it depicts a nostalgic love and attachment to the beloved city, Addis Ababa, the melting pot of all Ethiopian people.
Subsequent singles, such as the traditionally entertaining Demamaye and Endi Endi both released between 2016 and 2017 become fan’s favorite reaching well over million video viewers.
In 2018 and 2019, FisumT delighted his followers with some contemporary sounds: Pretty Woman and Gushim. Both singles represent a fusion of afrobeat and Ethiopian music that led him to share the stage with multiple afrobeat artists, including one of Africa’s best and multi-award winning artist Davido.
Notable Acting Roles:
Over the years, FisumT assumed various acting roles and participated in stage performances. Ye Facebook Arbegnoch (TV series 2019 – Current) – is currently airing in Ethiopia on Nahoo TV, a private Infotainment TV station.
In addition, FisumT performed in various stage plays. Most recently in 2019, FisumT made a highly anticipated return to stage as one of the leading characters in Sostegnaw Sew, written by Negussie Semwork and directed by Temesgen Melaku.
Current (Artistic) Projects:
While FisumT continues to record Season 2 of the popular TV series Ye Facebook Arbegnoch; sources close to the artist indicated that he is also actively working on his first music album. Hopefully, these rumors are truthful as many of us fans are eagerly waiting for such a surprise.
Other Ventures
FisumT is the founder of Habtech, LLC., a privately owned education technology company based in Atlanta, GA. Habtech launched a mobile application (App) called Habesha Kids that provides free supplemental educational material to all Ethiopian children ages 2 through 8. Habesha Kids is the first bilingual mobile app in Amharic and English for the targeted age group. The learning material includes Amharic alphabet, the ABCs, colors, numbers, body parts, and animals presented in a fun, exciting, and interactive fashion. It is now available for download on Android, Apple, and Amazon devices free of charge.
FisumT has also established an online ecommerce site called E-Merkato.com – The site offers an array of Ethiopian products from traditional kitchen ware to quality spices; creative clothing to must have memorabilia; and much more. The intent is to bring all kind of Ethiopian flares as close as just a click away!
FisumT is also a certified aircraft maintenance mechanic licensed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the US. He completed his studies at the Aviation Institute of Maintenance in Atlanta.
FisumT is an advocate of The Ethiopian Diaspora Trust Fund (EDTF), which is a non-profit organization established to mobilize the global Diaspora community to raise funds for vital social-economic projects in Ethiopia. In order to rally and encourage the Ethiopian community to contribute at least $1 US Dollar per day, as the prime minister called for, FisumT launched an official social media campaign called #EDTFchallenge. FisumT’s initiative resulted in a remarkable increase in participation and funds raised. His efforts were recognized by many media outlets and the President of the EDTF.
