NY public health expert Kistein Monkhouse fighting for fair diagnosis by breaking barrier in healthcare communication

A victim of medical bias, Kistein Monkhouse is now helping Americans to strongly voice health needs to the doctors and healthcare system through her unique digital solution.

NYC, NY – May 11th, 2022 – The U.S. healthcare system is still plagued with the issue of medical bias and gaslighting and the most common victims of the problem are the minority groups and women. However, a public health expert-turned-entrepreneur, Kistein Monkhouse, M.P.A, has taken up the baton to fight for effective and fair diagnosis for all in the country, regardless of race, gender, or any other parameter. The NY-based visionary has come up with an innovative digital health solution, Patient Orator, that is uniquely designed to break the existing barriers in the healthcare system. 

Kistein has launched Patient Orator with the goal to address health inequities and medical bias by bridging communication gaps between patients and their health teams as well as patients and their doctors.

Two recent studies by the University of Chicago and JAMA Network Open have shed light on the dominant existence of medical racism in the American healthcare system. According to the studies, doctors have a tendency to mark Black patients in a negative light while writing medical reports and notes. It results in wrong diagnosis and ineffective treatment that further abets distrust in the country’s healthcare system among the Black community. On the other hand, female patients are often subjected to gaslighting both in regard to their mental and physical health. In other words, it has come to light that a good bunch of female health issues are usually dismissed or misdiagnosed by doctors and tagged as something “less critical”. 

Kistein Monkhouse had been a victim of medical gaslighting and medical bias due to the absence of effective communication in the healthcare system. What started with an unexplainable crippling pelvic pain in 2015, was later discovered to be the result of uterine fibroids. She had visited over 7 different providers and failed to get the right answer for the cause of her excruciating pain. When she visited ED for the first time for her pain, she learned that she had a miscarriage, and in the follow-up visit, she further learned that she had experienced a chemical pregnancy. 

No diagnosis or treatment could stop the pain. From gastroenterologists to OBGYNs, she consulted all only to meet with futile results. Finally in spring 2018, she got in touch with a pelvic pain specialist who advised her to get an ultrasound. She met with another provider who discovered a few uterine fibroids but said that her fibroids were too small to be causing her pain. Kistein learned a few months later (in 2019), that her fibroids had increased x3 and she was scheduled for surgery. The pandemic started shortly after, putting non-urgent surgeries on hold. Currently, she lives with 6 fibroids, one of which is pressing against the bladder causing abdominal discomfort. 

“There is a strong presence of ‘bias’ in the American healthcare system which is causing impediments in channelizing effective diagnosis, treatment, and care. In other words, a lot of healthcare providers don’t pay heed to patients’ concerns and more so if the patient is a woman or belongs to the Black and Brown community. I have been a victim of the same, and I am looking forward to redefining the pattern through Patient Orator”, stated Kistein. 

Kistein stresses that one of the ways to ensure effective communication is through breaking the barriers in healthcare communication. That starts with the patients. Per her statements, people need to ask the right questions, record their health problems, and demand accountability from healthcare providers that refuse to work in partnership with them and or their family members. This is where Kistein’s company, Patient Orator, becomes helpful. Patient Orator utilizes a cutting-edge technology that teaches people the skills to communicate their health concerns effectively to healthcare providers through a mobile app. 

Kistein still lives with severe chronic pelvic pain but as her health journey continues, and she is doing things differently now. At present, she documents her health concerns, takes notes during her health appointments, and makes it a point to ask questions about her care.

Patient Orator has come up with a breakthrough mobile app that enables users to plan their health visits so that they can “voice” their health concerns to the providers, this way, they can effectively communicate their problems without the anxiety and fear before being in the physical presence of a doctor and without the risk of being interrupted or dismissed by their health care team.
